The 2008 competition

This year, more than 300 wine makers have been presented, with about 514 samples, and 13 countries have been represented:

The 2008 edition of the "Rieslings of the World" Competition have taken place in the Contades hall of the Strasbourg Music and Conference Centre, laid out for the occasion with 230 tasting tables.

The results have been announced after the competition, under the watchful eye of a bailiff.

A stringent tasting protocol

Here are a few of its principles:

  • Tasting will be blind and without discussion between the judges
  • The juries will be international
  • Marks will be allocated with weighted coefficients
  • Final compilation of the marks will be done under the supervision of a bailiff

degustationThe wines presented each year show a qualitative improvement. In this way, as “Rieslings of the World“ progresses, the distinctions increase.In 1998, no Premier Gold Medal was awarded, while in 2006, 6 were awarded and in 2008 9 Trophies of Excellence have been awarded.

In 2008, 514 samples coming from 13 countries were presented to 230 international jury members : wine servers, oenologists, wine producers, restaurant owners, wine merchants, certified wine tasters, specialized journalists,…

 

The Wines in the 2008 Competition

The Vintages entering into this 11th competition are:
"Dry" wines, according to french definitions, with 2 categories
2006 Dry Riesling (ex. Riesling Alsace)
2006 and 2005 Dry Riesling "Grand Cru ou assimilés" VQA-A;V;A; -this status is given to wines which satisfy strict quality standards. They must come from specific vineyards

 

"Sweet" wines according to french definitions, with 3 categories
2005 and 2004 Late harvest
2005 and 2004 Noble grape harvest selection and icewine

 

Categorie the “TOP” (vintage before 2005)
for an older Vintage that you consider as “the top” wine in your cellar
